Gran fondo training plan with climbing (12 weeks)
A gran fondo is long, and in the mountains most of its time is spent going up. This plan is for a rider with a fondo or two done who wants to ride the next one strongly. From 6 hours a week on four rides it adds sweet-spot sessions in the build and climbing repeats in the peak weeks, and sends the long ride up as many hills as you can find. Targets are in watts from an FTP of 230 W, with ERG-mode notes for a smart trainer.

Dates assume a start on Monday 9 November 2026 with no race date, so the plan ends with a goal ride. Your own plan starts the Monday after you build it, and with a race date it counts back from race day.

Goal session · Saturday 30 January 2027
Goal ride: Gran fondo, 140 km, about 6 h 35 min of riding at your race effort (150–175 W, steady, RPE 4–5). There is no event on the calendar, so this is your test: plan a route with places to refill, and ride it as if it were the day. Eat 40–60 g of carbohydrate an hour from the first hour, drink to thirst, and add electrolytes in the heat. Ride the climbs at your own sweet-spot effort or below, not with the group, and recover on the descents; the hardest climbs often come after hours in the saddle.
How we built it
The assumptions behind this plan.
- Rides are planned by time. Distances are estimates at an average of 21.2 km/h (for your experience level, adjusted for mountainous terrain), rounded to 5 km; ride the time and let the distance be what it is.
- You gave no day off, so the plan keeps Sun as a rest day every week; mark a day unavailable if you'd rather choose it.
- Your longest recent ride (80 km, about 3 h 45 min) is more than 55% of your riding week, the most a long ride takes on 4 rides a week, so long rides restart at 3 h 20 min and build from there as the weekly hours grow.
- Week 1 is 6 h of training, close to the 6 h you ride now; 4 rides a week with the long ride on Sat.
- Weekly hours peak at 8 h 55 min in week 9, above the usual 8 h for your experience, so the long ride can reach about 75% of the distance while taking at most 55% of the week. The hours still rise at most 9% a week (30 min at least), and never past your 10 h ceiling.
- Weekly hours include the strength sessions, so the riding is a little less than the totals.
- Mountainous course: long rides look for as much climbing as you can find, and the peak weeks include climbing repeats.

Rest day: no training. Recovery is when the riding turns into fitness.
Fri · Recovery spin · 30 min · 10 km
Recovery spin 30 min (about 10 km) (under 125 W, very easy, RPE 2–3), small gears, flat roads or the trainer. Loosen up, nothing more. Check the bike as you ride: gears, brakes, tyres.
Sat · Race · 6 h 35 · 140 km
Goal ride: Gran fondo, 140 km, about 6 h 35 min of riding at your race effort (150–175 W, steady, RPE 4–5). There is no event on the calendar, so this is your test: plan a route with places to refill, and ride it as if it were the day. Eat 40–60 g of carbohydrate an hour from the first hour, drink to thirst, and add electrolytes in the heat. Ride the climbs at your own sweet-spot effort or below, not with the group, and recover on the descents; the hardest climbs often come after hours in the saddle.
Sun · Rest
Recovery: rest, eat well, and stay off the bike for a day or two.
● = hard day. Cutback weeks are 20–25% lighter so the body can absorb the training.
Questions about this plan
How do I train for the climbs if I live somewhere flat?
Do the climbing repeats on the trainer: the plan has them seated at low cadence, 60 to 70 rpm, holding steady power for blocks of 8 to 10 minutes. The sweet-spot sessions suit ERG mode on a smart trainer, which holds the power for you. On the day, ride the climbs at the sweet-spot effort or below, not with the group.
What is sweet spot?
Riding just under threshold, about 88 to 94 percent of your FTP. It builds the fitness long climbs need and is easier to recover from than full threshold work. In this plan it is the midweek quality session from the build phase on and the cap for the climbs on long rides.
How big does the plan get?
From 6 h a week up to 8 h 55, with a longest ride of 4 h 50 (100 km), 2 lighter weeks along the way and a 1-week taper into the goal ride.
Should I retest my FTP during the plan?
If you can, test again around the middle of the plan and build a new plan from the new number so every target moves with you.
